Serengeti National Park

The endless plains, the big cats and the Great Migration.

Size
about 14,750 km²
Getting there
about 7 h by road
Stay
2–4 nights
A tower of giraffes crossing the open Serengeti plains

The Serengeti is the park most people picture when they think of a safari: open grass plains broken by granite kopjes, with more lion and cheetah than almost anywhere in Africa. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the heart of the Great Migration, when well over a million wildebeest, with zebra and gazelle, circle the ecosystem through the year.

Where you stay matters more here than in any other park, because the Serengeti is so large. We base you where the animals are that month: the Seronera valley in the centre all year, the southern plains around Ndutu for calving, or the far north for the Mara River crossings.

When to go

All year. June to October is dry and the herds are in the north; December to March they calve in the south.
