Questions

Before you travel

The questions we are asked most. For anything else, ask a planner on WhatsApp.

How do I book?

Send a request through the planner, WhatsApp or email. We reply within 2 hours with ideas, then a day-by-day itinerary and price, usually within 24 hours. A deposit confirms the booking; the balance is due before travel.

Is the safari private?

Yes. Every Trailheads safari uses a private 4×4 with a pop-up roof and your own driver-guide, for your party only.

What is included in the price?

The vehicle and guide, all park and crater fees, your lodges or camps on the meal plan shown, and water in the vehicle. International flights, visas, insurance, tips and drinks are extra.

Are prices per person?

Yes. Our "from" prices are per person, two sharing, in the quietest season each safari runs. Peak months, single rooms and group sizes change the price, and we always quote the exact figure.

When is the best time for a safari?

June to October is dry, with animals gathered near water. January to March is calving season in the southern Serengeti. April and May are the long rains: green, quiet and cheaper.

How much should we tip?

Tips are optional and given at the end. As a guide, many guests give their driver-guide about $20–30 a day per group. We explain the details when you book.

Do I need a visa?

Most visitors need a visa, and most nationalities can apply online through the official Tanzania eVisa website before travelling. Check the rules for your passport before you book flights.

Do I need vaccinations?

A yellow fever certificate is required if you arrive from, or transit through, a yellow fever risk country. Ask your doctor or a travel clinic about other vaccinations and malaria prevention.

What should I pack?

Neutral-coloured layers (mornings are cold in the highlands), a warm fleece, a hat, sunscreen, binoculars and a soft bag. If your trip includes a light-aircraft flight, keep to about 15 kg.

Can we bring children?

Yes. Our family safari keeps drives short and uses lodges with pools and family rooms.

Do you run Kilimanjaro climbs?

Our sister company Barafu Tours runs private Kilimanjaro climbs, and we can join a climb to your safari. Kilimanjaro with Barafu.
